Tony graduated from the Camborne School of Mines in 1993 with a degree in Industrial Geology and then completed a master’s in Mining Engineering in 1994. His first job was with Ready Mixed Concrete working in their graduate management scheme before joining Bodfari Quarries as an Assistant Quarry Manager in 1996.
He joined the Transport Research Laboratory in 1997 based at their Scottish office at Herriot-Watt University. There he worked on developing rock slope risk hazard and assessment systems as well as on a wide number of earthwork remediation schemes. These were for private clients as well as public bodies such as Local Authorities and the Scottish Office (later the Scottish Executive).
In 2000 he moved back to Manchester and began work at EDGE Consultants UK Ltd. After becoming a Charted Geologist, he continued to work on earthwork inspection, assessment and remediation schemes, specialising in rock slopes.
Tony joined Network Rail in 2005 where he has progressed to become the Route Asset Manager for Geotechnics for North West and Central Region. He and his team manage a portfolio of 36,500 earthwork assets over a wide geographic area stretching from the Scottish border and London. He has co-authored several papers on rock slope and landslide risk.
