Dr Joel Smethurst is an Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering within the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southampton. He is member of the Infrastructure Research Group and is currently the undergraduate Admissions Tutor for Civil Engineering. His main technical interest is in geotechnical transport infrastructure, including the long-term performance, deterioration/aging, and failure of geotechnical structures, and their upgrade and repair. A lot of this work has been focussed on understanding the modes of failure and deformation within earthworks (infrastructure cuttings and embankments), including the influence of vegetation, climate and climate change on earthwork stability. Other areas of research interest includes soft coastal sediments, cliff instability and erosion, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring techniques, and the design of retaining structures. Joel completed his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Southampton in 2004, and was previously a Research Fellow (2004-2012), and Lecturer (2012-2018) at the University.
