professor of geotechnical engineering,
University of Birmingham
Professor Jefferson is currently Head of School at the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, where he is also a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering and Deputy Director – geo-structures of the UKCRIC National Buried Infrastructure Facility. He has experience of both water and geotechnical sectors, but his primary research and professional interests span Geotechnical Engineering with an interdisciplinary and a transdisciplinary nature combining, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, and geo-environmental engineering and more recently sustainability/resilience associated with underground space in urban areas. He is principal and co-investigator on a number of projects including the Alternative Raw Materials with Low Impact (ARLI) examining how waste can be turned into marketable products and the development of electro-kinetic soil stabilisation. He is currently sits on ISSMGE TC307 - Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering, the US Transportation Research Board, Transportation Earthwork committee and US Geo-institute’s Engineering Geology and Site Characterization committee.
