Excellence in Outreach
This category looks to recognise organisations, teams or individuals that have gone the extra mile to inspire people to consider a career in geotechnical contracting or consultancy. Whether it is promoting science, technology, engineering and maths in schools and colleges; mentoring interns, apprentices and new joiners; or working with youth organisations, this organisation/team/individual deserves recognition for encouraging younger people to take part in the ground engineering and construction sector.

Charlie Pritchard-Gordon
Charlie Pritchard-Gordon: Inspired by the positive impact of my own mentor, I am passionate about developing the next generation of ground engineers. As a mentor in the Ground Forum Undergraduate Mentoring Programme, I successfully guided my mentee, helping them secure their first role in the industry. I actively engage with students at career fairs, promoting STEM careers and encouraging them to pursue placements. Furthermore, I organised ICE Attribute Presentations, providing valuable insights on Chartership to hundreds of attendees across the UK and India. As a dedicated buddy to multiple graduates and summer students, I prioritise creating a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals can thrive. My efforts demonstrate a commitment to developing a skilled and diverse workforce for the future of ground engineering.
Bam Ritchies
Angus MacGregor
BAM Ritchies’ Angus MacGregor champions young people and early career engagement with ground engineering and the construction sector, routinely supporting our primary schools, secondary schools, tertiary education establishments, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), Skills Development Scotland, and employability schemes through hands-on contributions, administration and mentoring. Angus has sustained this commitment over many years and as a result has seen primary aged young people develop and grow into career professionals applying skills for life developed in workshops and activities Angus has run or facilitated.
EKFB
Geology team education and community outreach
The EKFB Geology Team’s outreach initiative has inspired over 600 students across primary, secondary, and SEND schools along the C23 route, showcasing geology as an exciting gateway to STEM careers. Through hands-on activities like fossil handling, geological sample analysis, and mock excavations, the team brought the subject to life, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm. Tailored sessions ensured inclusivity, particularly for SEND students, and aligned with the National Curriculum for seamless integration into lessons. Public events, such as the Wendover Canal Path opening, further engaged local communities, highlighting the cultural and scientific value of the region’s geological heritage. Collaboration with schools and stakeholders strengthened relationships, while innovative tools like 3D modelling expanded learning opportunities. By fostering a passion for STEM, breaking down barriers, and promoting geotechnical career pathways, the team created a lasting educational legacy and a positive perception of HS2 as a catalyst for community enrichment and inspiration.

Mine Environment Management
Environmental engineering STEM placements
Mine Environment Management (MEM) is a small, family run geo-environmental engineering and geoscience consultancy, where the impact on our wider community is an important consideration of our values and ethics. The MEM team is involved in academic outreach, including hosting regular MSc placements: Since 2019 this has included nine MSc students. MEM visits relevant university departments to give presentations on the variety of environmental engineering projects the company undertakes. MSc students are based in MEM’s Cardiff office, where they work alongside MEM colleagues. MEM is supported by clients with this endeavour, and MSc placement students are actively encouraged to present the findings of their research as papers and at conferences. Alongside MEM’s outreach supporting women in STEM, since early 2024 the company has supported one of the team to become a mentor for the EQUATOR project, working towards equity, diversity and inclusion in Geography, Earth and Environmental Science.
